Dana Naismith, Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Counselling Therapist

I am a practicing registered psychiatric nurse since 2003 and hold a licence with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba. I hold a Master’s degree in Health Studies and a Bachelors degree in Arts (Sociology) from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelors of Science degree (Psychiatric Nursing) from Brandon University.

I have over 10 years of experience working with adults struggling with addiction and addiction related issues. I value the work I have been able to do with families who have loved ones who deal with addiction and addiction related issues. I also work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and struggles with life changes. My therapeutic approach is shaped by my training in mental health holistic care with strategies and techniques designed using a client-centered approach.

I have a passion working with individuals who are seeking to make changes in their lives. I have experience and knowledge working with those who have chosen a Harm Reduction approach to their substance use (eg. Opiate Replacement Therapy). I also have supported those who have chosen an Abstinence based approach to their recovery (eg. 12 step). I work closely with clients and their families to mitigate the guilt, shame and stigma that often accompanies addiction. My medical training and knowledge in psychopharmacology is something my clients can benefit from, especially if they have questions regarding medication side effects.

Using a strength-based approach I seek to find hope within those that I work with. I feel that my clients are the experts in their own lives and my job is to walk alongside and remind them of their expertise. Trust is important in a therapeutic relationship and so I spend time developing a culture of comfort in my sessions so that clients can feel safe sharing their experiences.

Reaching out for help is brave!! I look forward to getting to know you, hearing your story and walking beside you on this journey.
